About this course

Work through Tadao Ando's Casa Monterrey in Mexico—a concrete and glass house built into a hillside with views of the Sierra Las Mitras mountains. The SketchUp model comes pre-grouped by material, letting you focus on D5 Render rather than modelling. You'll learn the camera system with two-point perspective and focal length control, both lighting methods (Geo & Sky for sun control, HDRI for reflections), the full asset pipeline from backdrop planes through Megascans and 3D Sky, and post-production in Photoshop. A bonus Interior Masterclass responds to member requests with a complete start-to-finish Scandinavian interior using path tracer rendering.

This comprehensive D5 Render course establishes you as a real-time rendering specialist through systematic exploration of one of the most popular architectural visualization platforms available today. You'll master D5 Render's powerful real-time capabilities for creating photorealistic images and animations that rival traditional offline rendering while dramatically reducing production time and enabling instant design iteration feedback.

The curriculum emphasizes practical application through Tadao Ando's iconic Casa Monterrey, teaching you to leverage D5 Render's extensive asset library, advanced lighting systems, and sophisticated material workflows. You'll develop expertise in scene composition, environmental effects, and professional rendering techniques that produce stunning exterior and interior visualizations suitable for client presentations and marketing materials.

Advanced workflow techniques include post-production integration with Adobe Photoshop, cinematic animation creation, and optimization strategies that balance visual quality with rendering performance. The course covers both technical rendering skills and artistic composition approaches that distinguish professional architectural visualization work in competitive markets.

These real-time rendering skills position you to excel in contemporary architectural practice where rapid visualization capabilities and instant client feedback are essential for project success. The techniques learned apply directly to design development, client communication, and competition submissions where compelling visual storytelling can determine project approval and commercial success.

This course will turn you into:

A confident D5 Render user

Set up cameras with two-point perspective, control exposure and depth of field, and switch between Geo & Sky and HDRI lighting systems depending on the shot.

A detail-obsessed visualiser

Match renders to real photographs through rigorous self-critique, using AI upscaling to study reference images and refining textures, assets, and lighting until they're indistinguishable.

A complete workflow practitioner

Take renders from D5 through LUT colour grading, Photoshop post-production with Camera Raw, and basic animation with camera paths and clip editing.

Syllabus

Chapter 1 - D5 Render Fundamentals+
Lesson 1 – Introduction, interface, environment & effects (8:39)

Tour of D5 Render's interface and introduction to Casa Monterrey by Tadao Ando—the Mexican hillside house we'll render throughout the course. The SketchUp model from 3D Warehouse has been cleaned up and grouped by material. We set up three exterior and three interior scenes matching reference photographs, including the internal pool and dramatic staircase views.

Lesson 2 – Importing the building & basic textures (15:09)

Import the SketchUp model into D5 and apply initial materials from the cloud-based asset library. You'll see how materials download to local storage and learn the difference between D5's free and Pro versions. Basic texture application gives immediate visual feedback before we refine everything in later lessons.

Lesson 3 – Cameras, lighting & weather (33:40)

Set up the advanced camera tool from the widgets menu—it enables batch rendering and proper aspect ratios rather than just cropping. Configure six cameras with two-point perspective, -0.15 exposure, 24mm focal length, and subtle depth of field. Compare Geo & Sky lighting (better sun control) versus HDRI lighting (better glass reflections), plus fog and weather settings.

Chapter 2 - Scene Development & Assets+
Lesson 4 – Populating the scene (31:53)

Surround the site with vegetation using D5's backdrop planes for distant trees and mountains. Use the size setting rather than scale for better control, and take a layered approach—placing backdrops at different distances for depth. The scatter tools make quick work of foreground vegetation while you eyeball placement per camera view.

Lesson 5 – In-built & bespoke assets (1:03:19)

Populate the scene with D5's built-in assets including parallax interiors—perfect for giving depth behind windows in apartment blocks. Then extend beyond the standard library with Megascans for landscape features and 3D Sky for premium assets. Each camera view gets individually populated to create convincing compositions.

Chapter 3 - Shot Refinement & Rendering+
Lesson 6 – Exterior shot refinement (1:19:23)

The second half of the course focuses on matching reference photographs through rigorous self-critique. Use an AI upscaling tool to enlarge precedent images so you can zoom into the detail. Work through modelling tweaks, texture refinements, and asset adjustments until each exterior shot closely matches the real Casa Monterrey photography.

Lesson 7 – Interior shot refinement (41:03)

Apply the same self-critique approach to interior shots. Add timber flooring, sculptures, and adjust the curtain wall lip and water depth to match reference images. Separate the staircase into its own texture group and refine interior lighting. Small details like the distance between water and pebbles make the difference between good and photorealistic.

Lesson 8 – Final renders & post-production (35:36)

Add spotlights above the staircase after cross-referencing with precedent photos. Master local exposure settings—lifting shadows makes renders more realistic since the human eye softens contrast naturally. Apply LUT files for cinematic colour grading, then take renders into Photoshop for final adjustments using Camera Raw filter and channel editing.

Chapter 4 - Animation & Advanced Features+
Lesson 9 – Introduction to animations (11:25)

Create one exterior and one interior animation clip using D5's video tools. Set up camera paths with forward dolly movements and depth of field that shifts focus during the shot. D5 renders 4K animations at 24fps in about 20 minutes per clip—fast enough for practical architectural short film production.

Lesson 10 – Widgets, studio & bonus tips (15:03)

Explore the Studio presets—curated environment and effects combinations for aerial shots, interiors, exteriors, morning, and night scenes. Double-click any preset to instantly transform your scene's mood, then tweak using your knowledge of environment and effects tabs. Also covers fog particle systems and the widgets menu for advanced camera tools.

Lesson 11 – Interior Masterclass (1:20:57)

Bonus lesson responding to member requests for more interior focus. Work through a complete Scandinavian-style interior from a SketchUp CGtips.org model, treating it like a live commercial project. Target the clean, high-end aesthetic seen in top archviz work. Use Poly Haven HDRIs for lighting and finish with path tracer rendering for photorealistic results.
