Furniture & Product Rendering with V-Ray
Learn to render furniture and products in V-Ray for SketchUp using both studio and contextual approaches. Five lessons cover precedent research with PureRef, model preparation (bevelling edges, Round Corners plugin), studio backdrop setup with dome lights and HDRI, material creation (leather, wood, fabric) using roughness and bump maps, camera techniques with depth of field, render optimization with denoising, and contextual living space scenes with staging and natural lighting.

About this course
Five lessons covering two approaches: studio rendering for detail-focused shots, and contextual rendering showing furniture in living spaces. Learn model preparation, lighting with HDRI and dome lights, material creation for leather/wood/fabric, camera depth of field, render optimization, and scene staging for lifestyle presentations.
This specialized furniture and product rendering course develops your expertise in creating studio-quality product presentations that rival commercial photography. Through detailed exploration of V-Ray's advanced lighting and material systems, you'll master both studio and contextual rendering approaches for maximum presentation versatility.
The curriculum emphasizes material authenticity for furniture and product design, teaching you to create convincing textures for complex surfaces including leather, fabric weaves, wood grains, and metal finishes. Through hands-on practice with professional lighting setups, you'll learn to enhance product features while maintaining realistic material representation.
Advanced techniques include studio environment creation, HDRI lighting integration, and camera optimization for product photography principles. The course covers both detailed close-up rendering and wide-angle contextual shots, giving you flexibility across different marketing and presentation requirements.
These specialized skills position you to compete in the furniture design and product visualization markets where exceptional image quality directly impacts commercial success. The techniques learned apply to product catalogs, marketing materials, and design presentations where compelling product imagery can determine market acceptance.

This course will teach you:
Model preparation and studio setup
Refine furniture models with bevelled edges and the Round Corners plugin for realism. Create studio backdrops with proper lighting using dome lights and HDRI environments.
Materials and studio shots
Create materials using roughness and bump maps. Apply leather textures from Cosmos with proper UV mapping. Adjust exposure, depth of field, and area lights for professional studio photography results. Optimize renders with denoising.
Contextual scenes
Design living space environments to showcase furniture in context. Set up floor, walls, and lighting with HDRI and sunlight. Stage scenes with sofas, plants, and decor to create compelling lifestyle presentations.
Syllabus
Two approaches to furniture rendering: studio shots that emphasize detail and craftsmanship, and contextual renders showing furniture in living spaces. Adam walks through precedent research using PureRef for mood boards, and outlines what we'll cover across the course.
Starting with a member-submitted TV unit model, we refine it for close-up renders. Joint lines between panels add realism, and the Round Corners plugin bevels edges so nothing looks unnaturally sharp. We create components for each panel and set up a simple studio backdrop ready for lighting.
A dome light with a studio HDRI from Cosmos gives us our base lighting. We rotate the HDRI to control shadow direction, then add a cool-toned area light on the opposite side — the classic warm/cool contrast technique. Progressive rendering previews changes in real-time as we dial in exposure.
Here, we focus on achieving a cool-toned studio shot, adjusting HDRI settings, lighting, and depth of field for realism. You'll learn to apply leather textures using Cosmos and fix UV mapping issues. The lesson covers de-noising to reduce graininess and explores key V-Ray render settings for higher quality.
Building a simple room set with floor, walls, and an opening for natural light. We stage the scene with the member's furniture plus supporting elements — plants, sofas, and decor. A rectangle fill light and evening HDRI create the lifestyle shot, showing the product in a real-world context.
