About this course

This course takes you through modelling Le Corbusier's Unité d'Habitation - a 17-storey housing block with over 300 apartments, internal streets, shops, and rooftop facilities. You'll start with BIM fundamentals and the Revit interface, then progress through structural modelling (pilotis and frame), building envelope (walls and curtain walls), interior layouts (the interlocking duplex apartments), furniture and fixtures, site modelling, and finally documentation with areas, schedules, annotation, and sheets.

This advanced Revit course develops your expertise in large-scale BIM projects through Le Corbusier's iconic Cité Radieuse, teaching you to handle complex residential developments with repetitive housing units and integrated community facilities. You'll master advanced modeling techniques that manage building complexity while maintaining model performance and coordination accuracy.

The Cité Radieuse project serves as the perfect vehicle for understanding multidisciplinary BIM coordination, from structural frameworks to MEP integration. You'll learn to organize and manage complex building information that facilitates collaboration with engineering consultants while maintaining design intent throughout the development process.

Advanced workflow techniques include site modeling, topographical integration, and comprehensive documentation strategies that support large-scale project delivery. The course covers scheduling methodologies, space programming, and visualization techniques that communicate complex architectural programs to clients and construction teams.

These advanced skills position you to tackle contemporary housing projects, mixed-use developments, and institutional buildings where BIM coordination is essential for project success. The techniques learned apply directly to competition work, large residential developments, and complex building types that require sophisticated modeling and coordination capabilities.

This course will turn you into:

A structural modeller

Model Le Corbusier's "bottle rack" concrete frame - pilotis, columns, beams, and slabs using Revit's structural tools.

A building envelope specialist

Master basic walls, stacked walls, and curtain walls. Create wall types and model the distinctive brise-soleil loggias of the Unité.

A documentation professional

Extract area plans, room schedules, and annotation. Set up sheets, manage views, and export coordinated construction documents.

Syllabus

Chapter 1 - BIM Fundamentals & Project Setup+
Lesson 1 – Introduction (1:10:08)

Covers what makes BIM different from CAD, introduces the Revit interface (ribbon, project browser, properties panel, viewport), and explains the Unité d'Habitation project you'll be modelling throughout the course.

Lesson 2 – Starting a New Project (33:19)

Learn to link external CAD drawings into Revit (linking vs importing), manage links, create levels for all 17 storeys of the building, and set up the structural grid based on the 4.19m column spacing.

Chapter 2 - Structural Framework & Building Envelope+
Lesson 3 – Modelling the Building's Structure (1:09:52)

Model Le Corbusier's "bottle rack" structural concept - the pilotis, concrete columns, beams, and transfer slabs. Learn to load structural families, place columns on grids, and understand structural vs architectural column tools.

Lesson 4.1 – Modelling the Envelope – Part 1 (59:45)

Covers walls in depth - basic walls with layered constructions, stacked walls for varying facade conditions, and curtain walls for glazed sections. Learn to create and edit wall types and assemblies.

Lesson 4.2 – Modelling the Envelope – Part 2 (55:20)

Complete the external envelope of the Unité - the distinctive brise-soleil loggias, roof elements, and floor slabs that wrap the structural frame.

Chapter 3 - Interior Design & Space Planning+
Lesson 5.1 – Modelling the Interior – Part 1 (1:00:22)

Model internal partition walls separating apartments from the circulation corridors ("internal streets"). Create lightweight wall types based on the original timber and plasterboard construction.

Lesson 5.2 – Modelling the Interior – Part 2 (1:00:25)

Model the interlocking duplex apartments - stairs connecting upper and lower levels, internal doors and openings, and use Groups to replicate typical layouts efficiently across the building.

Lesson 6 – Furniture, Fixtures, and Finishes (34:50)

Populate apartments with furniture using the Component tool. Learn to source families from the Autodesk library and third-party sources, place hosted and non-hosted components, and add fixtures like lifts and bathroom fittings.

Chapter 4 - Site Context & Documentation+
Lesson 7 – Topography (19:30)

Use the Toposolid tool to create the ground plane and landscaping around the building. Model the sloped terrain that allows the pilotis to work at different heights.

Lesson 8 – Site and Context (27:44)

Add site context using massing volumes to represent surrounding buildings. Create a site plan view showing the building footprint, access roads, and landscaping in its Marseille context.

Lesson 9 – Areas, Rooms, Tags, and Schedules (44:32)

Set up area plans to measure GIA and apartment areas with colour-coded departments. Create rooms to define spaces, add tags, and build schedules that quantify the building's accommodation.

Lesson 10 – Annotation and Detailing (35:10)

Add 2D annotation to views - dimensions, text, symbols, and detail lines. Understand the difference between model elements and drafting elements, and when to use each.

Lesson 11 – Views, Visibility, and Graphics (36:38)

Control view parameters, crop regions, and visibility settings. Use the Revit camera to create perspectives and walkthroughs through the internal streets and apartments.

Lesson 12 – Sheets, Printing, Exports (30:52)

Create sheets with title blocks, place views on sheets, and manage drawing numbers. Learn how revisions work in Revit, and export to PDF, DWG, and other formats for sharing.
