Rhino to Revit Workflow

Compare different approaches for integrating Rhino and Grasshopper designs with Revit's BIM environment. The course covers four methods: importing as reference geometry for drawing production, importing as native Revit elements with BIM properties, using Speckle cloud connectors for real-time data transfer, and running Rhino Inside Revit as an embedded plugin. The final lesson demonstrates a complete production workflow for generating architectural drawings from complex parametric forms.

About this course

Five lessons covering four different integration methods. Start with simple DWG reference imports for drawing production—useful when your design is finalized and you just need Revit's sheet management. Then learn native geometry import via SAT files with full BIM properties for scheduling and coordination. Explore Speckle's cloud connectors for real-time data transfer between applications. Finally, use Rhino Inside Revit to run Grasshopper within Revit itself, transforming parametric geometry into smart BIM objects. The last lesson demonstrates a complete production workflow using the Heydar Aliyev Centre—floor plans, sections, and sheets ready for professional documentation.

This specialized workflow course revolutionizes your approach to integrating parametric design with comprehensive BIM documentation through sophisticated methods for transferring complex Rhino and Grasshopper designs into Revit's intelligent building environment. You'll master multiple integration approaches from simple reference imports through advanced cloud-based connectors that optimize collaboration across multidisciplinary teams.

The curriculum emphasizes practical implementation of workflow strategies that maintain design intent and geometric accuracy while leveraging Revit's comprehensive documentation and coordination capabilities. You'll develop expertise in managing complex building information across parametric design and traditional BIM environments, ensuring innovative geometric forms retain proper BIM properties and coordination capabilities.

Advanced integration techniques include Rhino Inside Revit implementation, Speckle connector workflows, and production documentation strategies that bridge the gap between computational design innovation and professional project delivery. The course covers both technical integration skills and strategic workflow optimization approaches that support efficient design-to-documentation pipelines.

These workflow skills are essential for contemporary architectural practice where parametric design capabilities must integrate seamlessly with BIM coordination requirements. The techniques learned apply to complex architectural projects that require both computational design innovation and comprehensive project documentation while maintaining coordination accuracy throughout the development process.

Syllabus

Lesson 1 – Simple Reference Import Workflow (25:00)+

Start with the simplest approach: export Rhino geometry as a DWG file and link it into Revit as a reference model. Prepare your geometry for export—clean up problems, optimize mesh density—then use Revit's drawing and sheet management for title blocks, revisions, and documentation while keeping your parametric geometry intact.

Lesson 2 – Native Geometry Import with BIM Properties (30:00)+

Export Rhino geometry as a SAT (ACIS) file to bring it into Revit as native elements with BIM properties. Unlike reference geometry, native imports appear correctly in all views—plans, sections, elevations—and accept Revit parameters for scheduling and coordination. Clean and optimize your Rhino model before export to avoid geometric problems.

Lesson 3 – Cloud-Based Connectors with Speckle (25:00)+

Use Speckle to transfer geometry via the cloud. Create a Speckle account, install the Speckle Manager, and add connectors for Rhino and Revit. Push geometry from Rhino to a Speckle stream, view it in the web viewer, then pull it into Revit—or any other connected application. The same principles apply to other connectors like Autodesk Data Connector and Conveyor.

Lesson 4 – Rhino Inside Revit Plugin Integration (35:00)+

Install Rhino Inside Revit—an official plugin from McNeel that runs Rhino and Grasshopper within Revit. A new ribbon tab appears with a START button that loads Rhino. Use Grasshopper to read Rhino geometry and assign it the data structure Revit understands, transforming "dumb" forms into smart BIM objects that accept categories and parameters.

Lesson 5 – Production Workflow & Architectural Drawings (25:00)+

Create floor plans and sections from your imported Heydar Aliyev Centre geometry. Define levels based on working surfaces in Rhino—use a Grasshopper script in Rhino Inside to extract elevations automatically instead of measuring each one manually. Set up views, place them on drawing sheets, and export professional documentation for presentations, competitions, or project delivery.
