Syllabus
Lesson 1 – Introduction (2:46). A quick introduction explaining what’s coming within the course, talking over the building model we’ll be using and introducing you to the precedent that we’re working toward for our final images and animations, by https://kraken-studio.com/
Lesson 2 – Landscape tools (15:18). We start the modelling of the scene with Unreal Engine’s impressive landscape tools to sculpt hills, mountains, the backdrop and recesses for our lake that will surround the subject building.
Lesson 3 – Importing the building (23:42). With the landscape formed, we import the SketchUp model using Datasmith and apply some basic textures to give us early insight into what the overall scene will look like. We revisit these textures later in the course, to ensure they’re fit for final renderings.
Lesson 4 – Basic lighting setup (12:19). Let there be light! We use the 4th lesson to load in the essential environment lights, volumetric clouds and height fog to illuminate the scene and create an early sense of mood to our scene, which will be developed down the line.
Lesson 5 – Cameras (15:11). It’s never too early to position your cameras to focus your efforts on the areas that are within view and focus. We explain how to set cameras in various ways, how to deploy depth of field for improved realism and introduce you to an architectural plugin for 2-point perspective shots, which aren’t in -built within Unreal Engine, out of the box.
Lesson 6 – Foliage tools (23:38). This is where we start to get a glimpse of the final results! The foliage tools within UE5 are incredible, within a few sweeps of a brush you have a scene populated with trees, grass, rocks and more. In this lesson you’ll learn all you need to populate your projects with highly detailed assets without killing your frame rate and project performance!
Lesson 7 – Detailed assets (26:04). After all of the speed of the previous lesson, we slow it down here by individually picking out detailed assets to help frame each camera view and enhance the visual variation of each scene for ultimate realism.
Lesson 8 – Setting the mood (24:14). With the heavy lifting out of the way we proceed to tweak the lighting, fog, god rays and post process volume settings to finalise the look and feel of the project, ready for rendering.
Lesson 9 – Final Lumen settings (8:02). We finalise the scene with enhanced Lumen settings to improve the quality of lighting, sharpness, contrast, and reflections, so that when you set the project to render a lot of the settings are built into the project already, which also allows you to export walkthroughs etc.
Lesson 10 – Rendering stills & animations (26:32). To conclude the course, we explain the steps needed to extract images and animations from your UE5 projects. We also cover console variables and deploying Adobe After Effects to get the most from your visuals and export your animations as useable video files.
Why Architects & Designers should use Unreal Engine.
The architectural world is undergoing a paradigm shift with the advent of real-time rendering and VR-capable platforms, like Unreal Engine. Their significance in architectural projects, especially in exterior and landscape ventures, cannot be overstated. In the traditional visualization process, architects and designers would have to wait painstakingly for renders, often making adjustments blindly and hoping for the best in the next render cycle.
Real-time rendering eradicates this waiting game, offering immediate feedback and enabling instantaneous adjustments. This is paramount when dealing with vast exterior spaces and intricate landscapes, where lighting, textures, and natural elements play a pivotal role in the design’s overall aesthetic and feel. Moreover, the immersive capability of VR transports stakeholders directly into the envisioned space, allowing them to experience and interact with the environment on a human scale—making design nuances palpable and fostering deeper connections to the project. Using Unreal Engine for these ventures not only streamlines the design and approval processes but also ensures a holistic representation of the project, capturing its essence and emotion in ways previously unattainable. In essence, it revolutionizes the way we conceive, visualize, and experience architectural marvels.
